The construction of the twin tube tunnel aims to reduce travel time between Thane and Borivali by 12 kilometers, providing a direct connection under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The tunnel will span 11.80 kilometers, with a diameter of 12.2 meters for each tube, accommodating 2 lanes each. Safety measures include fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and illuminated signboards.
Present Status:
Efforts to obtain environmental clearances and forest department approvals are underway. The project involves land acquisition, including government forest areas. With an estimated cost of approximately ₹8,404 crore, the project is slated for implementation under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Recent Developments:
Administrative approvals have been granted, and construction contracts awarded to M/S MEGHA ENGINEERING & INFRASTRUCTURES LTD (MEIL) for two packages covering the Borivali and Thane sections. The construction period is estimated to be five years.
